Portraits I take for myself – my grandfather at age 92

I close my eyes and I can see it. The office walls were always covered with news clippings, photographs, sales reports and random cartoons or quotes. The desk was rarely neat and it was often stacked high with papers. This is how I always remember my grandfather’s office. Whenever the family went to Kansas City to visit him we would stop by his office in Westport. As a child, his office always fascinated me. My grandfather is a very driven man; he’s an entrepreneur, outspoken, opinionated, interested in the world around him and ready to live life to its fullest. In some ways I think I have a bit of my grandfather in me.

He’s 92 now and still keeps an office in the building he owns in Westport. The last time I visited him I knew I wanted a to create a photo of my grandfather in his office. There was some conversation that perhaps we should take it in the park or at his house. But the answer was no; I wanted it in the office. The truth is, this photo is for me and it was made as a visual record of my childhood memories.

I love it when my couples trust me enough to work a scene and explore it enough to get just the right photo. I always want to push myself and see if I can create something new and exciting for my couples.

The way the strong late afternoon sun lit Natalie and Leon from behind reminded me of a magazine advertisement and I knew it was something I wanted to play with. That’s the thing about photography, the most important thing is to find the right light. A pretty location in bad light will always be just a pretty location in bad light. But a couple in an average location with dramatic beautiful lighting can lead to a dramatic beautiful photograph.

I’m going to be selfish for the moment and talk about what I love to photograph… I love photographing engagement sessions. I love it when I have wonderful couples that are excited about their photos and willing to play. I love it when I can add some editorial/fashion style work into the session. I love it when we can create something that future generations will look at and say, “wow, my parents were cool.” I really do love to photograph people.

Old Hollywood Portrait Session

For the past three years Peter and I have been hosting our Zettlmania Avatar Shoot at The Digital Wedding Forum’s annual convention. The theme was Old Hollywood (with a bit of film noir) and we shot everything in B&W with video lights. This year we had about 50 fellow photographers participate.

We do the project for several reasons.

Photographers don’t seem to have a lot of photos of themselves. Surprising but true.
It ensures I get to meet a lot of cool people and harass my friends. Seriously, I am humbled by the talented and creative people that I am able to photograph.
Photographers need to learn that it’s a good thing to be in front of the camera once in awhile. I’m always surprised by the number of people that tell me they can’t remember the last time they were in front of the camera. In truth that makes me a bit sad. We all deserve good photos of ourselves. I hope that these photos can become part of their collection.
It’s fun. I really enjoy photographing people – especially creative people. (I would love to someday be known as a photographer’s photographer.)

California Dreaming | St. Louis Wedding Photographers

Many of our brides choose to come back to their hometown of St. Louis to get married, but they still want to include a bit of their new home and city in their wedding plans. We always include an engagement session in all our collections as a way to get to know our clients better and help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera. (Very few us spend our life in front of the camera.) If travel plans can be made, we are always happy to photograph outside the St. Louis area.

This spring we made plans to extend our Las Vegas trip to include an engagement session in Los Angeles with Jamie and Bill. We had so much fun with the two of them. I am so very excited about their wedding. Below is my favorite photo from the session. I absolutely love how the two of them are so into each other. I adore the way Bill is caressing Jamie’s hair. Couples who are so well matched warm my heart.

(Note, it’s always a good idea to keep track of the Zettls’ travel plans as we rarely travel anywhere without taking photos of people. We don’t charge travel fees if we are already on the road. We’ll be in Chicago the weekend of May 15th shooting 2 engagement sessions and a bridal session. We still have room for more portrait sessions.
